Green Line Transit highlights list of amazing projects in 2014

When Finance and Commerce News announced their 2014 Top Projects list, there were no shortages of Union built projects or projects of great notoriety. Of the top 28 projects, 25 were led by signatory Union contractors, topped by the $957 million Met Council Green Line project. Additionally Union workers and subcontractors performed work at the 3 other recognized projects.

Target-Field-Station-AllStar-22-LargeThe Green Line Light Rail Transit project opened up for business in June, 2014 as a much anticipated transit system helping connect the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Built by Union Contractors Walsh Construction and Ames Construction / C.S. McCrossan Joint Venture, the project created over 5,400 construction jobs during a 3-1/2 year span.

This year’s listing of projects contained some of the most prestigious projects ever made on a single Top Projects listing including projects at Toro Headquarters, Valspar, Surly Brewing and the old St. Paul Schmidt Brewery- with the Schmidt Artist Lofts project. The U of M’s Northrup Auditorium historic renovation and Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building renovation projects were two very successful renovation projects led by Union contractors and Union workers including skilled LIUNA members.

According to the press release, projects were judged for their ‘degree of difficulty, creativity in design, innovated construction techniques, cooperation among contractors and management and sustainability efforts’. There were more than 100 nominations submitted state-wide.

Kraus-Anderson led the contractor listing with an impressive 6 Top Projects awards while Knutson Construction nabbed 3 awards. McGough Construction and Weis Builders each earned 2 projects on the list. Two apartment towers made the list with the Nic on Fifth, an Opus Design Build LLC 26 story luxury apartment tower project and the LPM Apartments in Loring Park, a 36 story luxury apartment tower built by Adolfson & Peterson Construction.
